KNOW YOUR HAIR ROOTS
As a hairstylist I found it important to know where I came from. I wanted to identify myself with other hairdressers from the past and present. I wanted to know hair's journey, past and present. In order for me to be the very best hairdresser I must first know where I came from. This is what I learned through my journey.
*In 1865 - Slavery Ends, but white's look upon black women who style their hair like them as well adjusted, "civilized". "Good Hair" becomes a good way for black women to enter certain schools, churches, social groups, and business networks.
*In 1880 -The metal hot combs are introduced, the heated comb becomes a way were black women can temporarily straighten kinky hair.
*In 1900 - Madame C. J. Walker develops a range of hair care products for black hair. She popularizes the "Press & Curl" style and white women begin to criticize black women for trying to look white.
*In 1910 - Walker makes The Guinness Book of World Records by becoming the first American Black Female Millionaire.
*In 1920 - Marcus Garvey encourages black women to embrace their natural hair and reclaim their African heritage by defying to look like white women.
*In 1954 - George E. Johnson invents and launches the "Ultra Wave Hair Culture". A hair straightener for men and a women"s hair straightener soon follows.
*In 1966 - Model Pat Evans defies both black and white standards of beauty by shaving her head bald.
*In 1968 - Diahann Carroll is the first American Black woman to appear on her own television network series with straightened curled hair.
*In 1970 - Angela Davis becomes an ICON of Black Power with her large natural fro.
*In 1977 - The Jheri Curl explodes the black hair scene.
*In 1979 - Braids and Beads cross the color line when Bo Derek appears in the movie "10" wearing a black braided style.
*In 1980 - Grace Jones makes noise with her close cropped trademark flat top fade.
*In 1997 - A cool sister named Erykah Badu appears with a wrapped head, promoting Afrocentrism.
* In 1999 - Lauryn Hill appears on People"s Magazine 50 Most Beautiful People bearing Locs.
*In 2001 - Hair Extensions or " Hair Weave" takes the hair industry by storm.
*In 2006 - Black Hair Care becomes a Billion Dollar Industry.
*In 2009 - Actor Chris Rock does a documentary on The Black Hair Care Industry and it opens up alot of minds about "our" black industry.
*In 2012 - The Black hair Care Industry is dominated by our Asian counterparts.
